AlphaRigs: eCommerce design & development

A builder of custom gaming PCs and workstations. Every build has its own page with the full parts list, tested frame rates and a price, and a short quiz points a buyer to the right machine.

What it solved

AlphaRigs builds gaming PCs and workstations to order. Each machine is put together by hand, stress tested for eight hours and shipped insured.

Buying a PC online takes a lot of trust. Plenty of listings are vague about the parts and say nothing about how the machine performs. AlphaRigs wanted the opposite: every part named on the page, and tested frame rates shown before anyone pays.

What AlphaRigs needed from it:

  • Give every build a page with its full parts list and a price.
  • Show tested frame rates, game by game and for each resolution.
  • Help a buyer who doesn’t know PC parts find the right machine.
  • Keep the pages fast, because buyers compare many builds.

What we built

Our team designed it and built it on Astro. It’s a catalogue, a set of buying guides and a shop in one.

  • The gaming PC catalogue: a filter column on the left and a grid of builds with prices and main parts.

    A catalogue with real filters

Gaming PCs and workstations, filtered by use, budget, processor, memory and graphics card. Each budget and each kind of work also has a page of its own.

  • The build page for a PC called Storm, with a photo of the case beside its price, parts and a Buy now button.

    A page for every build

The price, the main parts, the finish and the build time, with the full parts list one click away. A buyer can order it as it is or ask for changes.

  • The performance section of a build page: a list of games with an average frame rate beside each one.

    Frame rates, game by game

Each gaming build lists the average frame rate it reaches in popular games. A switch changes the numbers between 1080p, 1440p and 4K.

  • The PC Finder page, asking What will you mainly use this PC for, with a list of uses to pick from.

    PC Finder

A short quiz asks what the PC is for. It answers with four builds: the one to get, a stronger one, a cheaper one, and the cheapest that still does the job.

Why Astro

The catalogue is built ahead of time into static pages, so a build page opens fast on a phone. Astro sends very little JavaScript, and only the parts that need it, such as the filters and the cart, run in the browser. The site is served from Cloudflare.
